Blockchain technologies have great potential for impact on business, government, and society. However, for blockchains to be widely adopted and accepted, it is imperative that academia and industry address security of blockchain technologies (e.g., smart contracts). Conversely, blockchains can act as a powerful substrate for security and cryptographic technologies.

To address key challenges and developments in these budding new fields of 'Security of Blockchain' and 'Blockchain for Security', the Waterloo Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute (CPI) is organizing a workshop on Blockchain+Security, where a set of world-leading experts in these topics from industry and academia will give talks from Saturday, October 5 to Sunday, October 6th at the University of Waterloo. This workshop is open to undergraduate and graduate students, academics, industry professionals, as well as blockchain enthusiasts.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is Waterloo’s largest academic department, with over 2,500 students, 93 full-time faculty members and 50 support staff. In addition to offering undergraduate and graduate programs in electrical engineering and computer engineering, ECE provides academic expertise and support to Waterloo’s multidisciplinary mechatronics, nanotechnology, and software engineering programs.

Our research activities cover a wide range of fields, from high-voltage engineering and sustainable energy to breakthroughs in wireless technology that will enhance communications across our global society. Our faculty members and students are creating low-cost digital x-ray imagers to combat tuberculosis in developing countries, and building real-time embedded systems that will advance the design and reliability of consumer and industrial products.
