UW MATES

MATES (Mentor Assistance Through Education and Support) is a counselling-based, one-to-one peer support program offered by the University of Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association (WUSA) . MATES provides services to students who are experiencing social and academic difficulties, low level mental health concerns, and transitional problems into university/Canadian life.

MATES volunteers are required to go through an interview and selection process, extensive training and will always be under professional supervision, assuring our clients of their confidentiality. Services are available to students from all faculties. Students can access our services whether by referral, personally setting up an appointment, or by coming in to the MATES office during our hours of operation.

MATES provides one-to-one peer support for UW students from all faculties. Our volunteers are professionally trained in areas of peer support including:

  • everyday stress
  • academic concerns
  • social and relationship difficulties
  • low level mental health difficulties
  • transitional challenges to university life
  • challenges in adapting to Canadian culture
